Gerardo P. “Gerry” Verzosa devoted more than three decades of his life to the service of the Benguet Electric Cooperative (BENECO), leading it through a remarkable transformation. When he assumed leadership, the cooperative was struggling with high system losses, leadership issues, and inconsistent service. Through his vision and commitment, BENECO rose to become one of the country’s top-performing electric cooperatives.
Under his stewardship, BENECO achieved 100% energization of all barangays in Baguio City and Benguet, delivered among the lowest power rates in the Philippines, and initiated renewable energy projects such as the Man-asoc mini-hydro plant. He championed modernization, employee welfare, and the improvement of consumer services, leaving behind a model of cooperative management admired nationwide.
Despite challenges, Verzosa remained steadfast in his mission to light every home in Baguio and Benguet. He retired in April 2020 due to health reasons and passed away on September 16, 2020, at the age of 64. In honor of his legacy, BENECO’s headquarters was named the GM Gerardo P. Verzosa Building.
Gerardo P. Verzosa is remembered as a visionary leader, a dedicated public servant, and the man who made rural electrification a reality for countless families in the Cordillera.
